“I didn’t know back in 2016 when I started writing this book—which is a work of documentary poetry about abortion & contraception, fertility, and reproductive politics in my family and in U.S. history—that it would emerge into the world at such a particularly fraught time for abortion access in the United States. I did know that I wanted to treat these subjects as something other-than-fraught, and to try to do justice to the complicated and powerful roles that different reproductive experiences play in all our lives.
