Photay is the alias of Woodstock, NY-based composer, drummer, DJ, producer and musicalpolymath Evan Shornstein. As Photay, he has recorded a quartet of albums that organically bring togetherintricate chamber-pop arrangements, post-techno electronic textures, and a love of Black Atlanticpolyrhythms. With the London-based Afro-Latin group Penya, and the Tanzanian gogo musician MsafiriZawose, Photay has made an album under the name WEMA (Swahilifor “kindness” and “benevolence”), amulticultural celebration of rhythm and folkways. Photay’s music is built on positive intentions. Truly.
Windswept is the fifth solo album from Photay, the nom de plume of electronic naturalist, experimental-pop beatmaker and composer Evan Shornstein. Initiated when the producer created a synthesizer patch called “wind,” the nine-song cycle is under the spell of the titular weather element, its compositions touching upon the movement of air’s influence on human existence and emotional states, our hopes and dreams. Windswept, home-rave-ready and ghostly with its machines, brings together the various versions of Photay’s trademark sonic warmth and hardware pastoralism.
